Founded in 1973 and originally called the Center
for Brazilian Contemporary History Research and
Documentation, the initial objective was to host and
produce source documents related to Brazilian history.
In 2005, it expanded its scope of action and renamed
itself the School of Social Sciences. The School is
considered a leader in researching, organizing and
preserving public figures’ private documents, telling
Brazil’s political, economic, social and cultural history,
as well as the trajectory of the country’s international
relations. It acted early to democratize access to the
content of its historical archives, which can be consulted
for free on the internet.
