Encompassing a large number of projects and
activities outside Brazil, Fundação Getulio Vargas
has a specific area aimedat encouraging initiatives
elsewhere in Latin America and the Caribbean,
promoting innovative actions to meet the needs
of the region’s public and private sectors. The
Latin American Center for Public Policy (CLPP),
part of FGV’s International Affairs Division (DINT),
is tasked with identifying and developing these
opportunities in the form of applied research,
academic cooperation, project advice, training,
and corporate diplomacy, always in conjunction
with other FGV units, promoting better offerings
for existing and new international markets.
In 2016, FGV, through CLPP, took an important
step forward in terms of its action on the global
stage, representing Brazil in one of the leading
Latin American programs for the training of
public managers.
Developed in partnership with the Development
Bank of Latin America (CAF) and George
Washington University, CLPP held the first
Brazilian edition of the Latin American Programof
Seminars on Governability, Political Management
and Public Management.
This program is part of CAF’s initiative to
promote the institutional development of Latin
American countries by supporting research and
the production and dissemination of knowledge.
Organized for 15 years in 11 Latin American
countries, this series of seminars has so far had
more than 15,000 participants, largely public
managers at all levels and in all spheres.
The objective of the program is to contribute to
strengthening transformational processes while
maintaining satisfactory levels of governability
among government officials on a national and
international level, as well as members of civil
society. Its functions are guided by the topics
of decentralization, sustainable development,
strategic vision, and public effectiveness.
The first group of participants in the seminar
program was composed of public officials and
employees at municipal, state and federal levels,
as well as professionals from the private sector,
third sector and civil society in general. At the
end of the seminars, plans for specific, viable
solutions to problems found in various areas of
the public administration were presented.
These plans are available for use by CAF in
a cooperative database of best practices in
public policy. This database compiles innovative
responses to the challenges of the whole of Latin
America, highlighting FGV’s strong contribution
to the region’s development.
Due to the success of the first edition held in
Brazil, FGV has been asked to take part in the
program’s steering committee for the whole of
Latin America.
